Communication Matters
In a 24/7 world, communication is key!  Districts all across the nation are developing new and creative ways to increase communication between districts, teachers, parents, and students.

In August 2008, the S2H Forum held a webinar focused on ways for improving communication.  Three different school districts gave examples and shared successful communication tactics they have been using.  Some of those included electronic newsletters, enhanced/branded web sites, and parent notification systems.

Zac Rantz at Nixa R-2 Schools in MO had great success with an enewsletter, it even came to the point where the community relied on the information inside of it!  Stephanie Smith at Fort Osage R-1 SD in MO found great success by using an automated phone system.  This allowed the district to connect to targeted groups and deliver more specified information to them. Scott Johnson at Moreno Valley SD in CA also found that phone systems allows them to reach parents regarding lunch payments, grade updates, absences, and much more.   Click to Read More and View the Recorded Online Session

Practitioners' Perspectives
A Keen Look at Best Practices
As members of the School to Home Communication Forum, you understand the value of learning from the experience of others. It's often helpful to explore how other school leaders have improved their efforts to communicate with families and community members.

Administrators and school volunteers at Sayreville SD in New Jersey now breath a sigh of relief thanks to the ParentLink system that was implemented in their district in August 2008.  Through this article, learn about some of the benefits your district will gain from using an automated parent notification system.

Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Carla Sutherland said, "That (ParentLink) saves a lot of time. Not to mention that we're now sure we made every effort to notify the parent with the information we are trying to provide."  At Sayreville, they especially find the system useful because of the ability to reach parents during district-wide early dismissals.
