Recruiting and Retaining Effective Teachers
April 7, 2009

No one can dispute the power of a high quality teacher on the learning of his or her students. The question garnering increasing attention, however, is how we determine and support effectiveness in teaching. This challenge is exacerbated by the fact that too many of our teachers train to enter the school system as educators only to leave within the first five years. Using research and promising practice, this presentation gave a review of the research on factors that contribute to teacher shortages, described how the definition and evaluation of effectiveness can inform efforts to retain high quality teachers, and discussed national trends and state responses to recruit and retain the most effective teachers for our nation's students.
